This is the first Passat built using the modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform of VW AG. The car was introduced for model year 2015.
The car’s design differs from the old model by its lowered body and smaller windows giving it a more dynamic look, longer wheelbase allowing larger interior, without increasing external dimensions – the length of the vehicle is almost the same as the previous model. The wheelbase, which has moved the Passat B8 upmarket has been increased with 78mm compared to the previous module, improving rear seat passenger room and comfort. The Passat B8 body structure is also 21 kg lighter then the Passat B7, due to the increased use of high-strength and and hot-formed steel, which has increased from 15% to 27% compared to the B7.
The Passat B8 introduces several new assistant systems – Emergency Assist, Trailer Assist and Traffic Jam assist, which weren’t available until now.
The Passat B8 also comes with a completely new range of engines, based on the MQB platform. All Diesel engines are from the EA288 family, which was developed after the Dieselgate scandal and addresses the shortcoming of the old EA189 (Dieselgate) engines.
All engines comply with the EU6 emission standard.
Before the facelift (2020) the leading engine was the 2.0l 175kW TDI biturbo engine, with a maximum torque of 500Nm and 7-speed dual clutch (wet) gearbox.
